EEG continues to lead the way in promoting energy efficiency within the Middle East and beyond, with the signing of three new contracts.

In a first for Lebanon, EEG has been awarded Energy Performance Contracting (EPC) projects for Beirut’s Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel and Vendome Intercontinental Hotel. An EPC is unique in that the Energy Services Company is paid solely from the proven savings achieved after the design, installation, measurement and verifications are completed. Whilst EPC is widely used in the US and Europe, it is the first time that such a concept will applied in Lebanon.

EEG had previously undertaken an energy audit for the Phoenicia Intercontinental Hotel in 2008, followed by an updated lighting energy analysis in 2014, which was carried out in parallel at the Vendome Intercontinental Hotel. The outcome led to the negotiation of the EPC contract, which comprises retrofitting more than 24,000 lighting fixtures across the two hotels, with combined annual cost savings estimated at over US$400,000. Under the EPC, EEG will be paid via an agreed share of the monthly savings over three years, but only after all installations are done and savings verified.

Further afield, EEG has been awarded two new contracts in Mauritius. The first is an energy audit for Consolidated Fabrics Ltd (CFL), one of the largest textile plants in Mauritius and owned by CIEL Textile, a global player in textile manufacturing. CFL’s plant operates virtually all year round, with a substantial combination of electrical and thermal energy demand and costs. EEG will be looking to optimise the utilities further, following some efficiency improvements undertaken by the plant management in recent years.

In addition, following successful energy audits in 2013 and implementation of the energy efficient measures in 2014 for all of Sun Resorts Ltd’s properties (seven hotels, an industrial laundry and a golf course), EEG has signed a third year cooperation agreement. Under this new contract, EEG will be further assisting the group in continuous energy efficiency consulting and working closely with the head of engineering in pushing forward additional efficiency projects and capacity building of the chief engineers and their assistants.
